Sulawesi
(formerly know as Celebes) is roughly the size of
Great Britain and is divided into 3 sub-regions namely:
North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi and South Sulawesi.
The capital and principal city of North Sulawesi is
Manado. This province lies in the northern tip of
the world's most peculiarly shaped island, resembling
that of an orchid. Lying just north of the equator
(less than 27' North), the weather is humid and tropical,
with temperatures between 26' - 32' C. The province
is known as "Bumi Nyiur Melambai", the Land
of Wafting Coconut Palms.
The
prime tourist attractions of Manado are found both
on land and beneath the sea. The spectacular and amazing
sea gardens of Manado are found in the world famous
Bunaken National Marine Park, which comprises 5 islands:
Bunaken, Manado Tua, Siladen, Mantehage and Nain Island.
All 5 islands offer spectacular diving and snorkeling
opportunities for both novice and experienced divers.
In this marine park alone, there
are 3 000 species of marine life and about 400 species
of both hard and soft coral. Some of the finest diving
in the world lies in these waters with clear water
visibility of usually 30 meters. One can often see
Napoleon Wrasse, Turtles, Sharks, Barracudas, Rays,
Blue Ribbon Eels, Clown Fish and much more spectacular
marine life. Diving is year round and many divers
do return to Bunaken as a yearly pilgrimage simply
because the diving is so spectacular.
