PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course

As a PADI Assistant Instructor, you earn this rating by successfully completing the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor pogram and Instructor Examination (IE). Attaining the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor level means you have met the industry's highest instructor standards.

Course Overview
The Open Water Scuba Instructor program is the heart of the PADI Instructor training process. In the course, your diving skills and knowledge are applied to learning to teach the PADI System in the classroom, confined water and open water. The course is conducted by PADI Course Directors, dedicated to helping you become a successful PADI Instructor.

Instructor Examination
The PADI IE is your final step in becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Professional Instructor Examiners from PADI International or PADI Local Area Offices conduct the IE, ensuring that all the objectives of instructor training have been met. Due to the fact that IE is authorized by PADI International, the evaluation process is standardized, fair and objective. The final determination of one's certification as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor is not an arbitrary decision. With such extensive training and assurance of quality, objective evaluation, only your dedication and commitment to becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor should limit your likelihood of success.

For certification as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor you must pass all parts of the IE. The two-day IE is purely evaluative and you will be examined for the following:

2. Physiology
3. Equipment
4. General Skills and Environment
5. Recreational Dive Planner
6. PADI Systems, General Standards and Procedures

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Been a certified diver for at least 6 months, completed and logged at least 100 open water dives if you are taking the instructor exam immediately OR 60 logged dives and proof of certification for at least 6 months, if not taking the exam immediately

  • Certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor

  • Completed the Medic First Aid program within the past 2 years.

  • Submit an approved form for diving-medical examination conducted by a licensed physician. Examination must be done within the past 12 months
